The overview is shown for the left side of vehicle as an example.

1. Front side airbag

• With side airbag igniter on driver side - N199- or side airbag igniter on front passenger side - N200-
• ⇒ "8.3 Removing and installing front outer side airbag"

2. Bolt

• Renew after removing
• 8 Nm

1. Central airbag

• With igniter for central airbag for occupant collision protection, driver side - N737-
• Fitted on driver side
• ⇒ Rep. gr. 69 ; Removing and installing front side airbag, inner side

2. Clip

• If damaged, central airbag must be renewed.

3. Bolt

• Qty. 2
• 8 Nm

4. Pop rivet nut

• Qty. 2

5. Front seat frame
6. Armrest holder
7. Bolt

• Renew after removing
• 8 Nm

8. Electrical connector

Removing and installing front outer side airbag

Side airbag with side airbag igniter on driver side - N199- or side airbag igniter on front passenger side - N200- are referred to hereafter as "side airbag".

Removal and installation are described for the left side of vehicle as an example.

Removing

• Disconnect battery earth cable ⇒ Electrical system; Rep.

  gr. 27 ; Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery .

• Remove backrest padding in area of side airbag ⇒ Rep.

  gr. 74 ; Separating backrest cover from backrest padding .

CAUTION

It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentionally.

Risk of injury

• Discharge static electricity by briefly touching door striker plate.

• Release connector lock -3- in direction of -arrow-.
• Disconnect electrical connector -2-.
• Unscrew bolt -1-.
• Detach side airbag -4- from hook -5-, and remove it.

WARNING

Risk of injury due to unintended deployment of the airbag unit.

• Place the airbag unit with the airbag facing upwards.

• Place side airbag aside.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

CAUTION

It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentionally.

Risk of injury

• Discharge static electricity by briefly touching door striker plate.

• Connect electrical connector -1- in direction of -arrow A- until it engages audibly.
• Engage connector lock -2- in direction of -arrow B-.
• Make sure that electrical wire is not trapped.

• Connect battery earth cable ⇒ Electrical system; Rep.

  gr. 27 ; Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery .

CAUTION

It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentionally.

Risk of injury.

• Stay as far back as possible from pyrotechnic components when switching on the ignition

• Switch on ignition.
• Read and clear event memory using ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.

Tightening torques

Removing and installing front inner side airbag

Special tools and workshop equipment required

• release tool - T10236-

Removing

Side airbag with igniter for central airbag for occupant collision protection, driver side - N737- will henceforth be referred to as "side airbag".

• Disconnect battery earth cable ⇒ Electrical system; Rep.

  gr. 27 ; Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery .

• Remove cover and padding in area of backrest ⇒ Rep.

  gr. 74 ; Removing and installing backrest cover and padding .

CAUTION

It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentionally.

Risk of injury

• Discharge static electricity by briefly touching door striker plate.

• Release connector lock -2- in direction of -arrow-.
• Disconnect electrical connector -3-.
• Unscrew bolts -5-.

Important

• Removed bolts -5- must be coated with locking fluid. Locking fluid ⇒ Electronic parts catalogue (ETKA) .

• Remove clip -4- using release tool - T10236- .
• Unscrew bolt -8-.
• Guide side airbag -1- out of armrest holder -7-, and remove it.

WARNING

Risk of injury due to unintended deployment of the airbag unit.

• Place the airbag unit with the airbag facing upwards.

• Place side airbag aside

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
